Distinguished Professorships

Call for Nominations

The Provost invites nominations of candidates for one University Distinguished Professorship and two Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professorships. The nomination process is open until 5pm on Friday, February 25, 2022. These professorships are unrestricted and may be filled by a distinguished scholar in any field, although special consideration will be given to nominations of faculty from groups, fields, or disciplines that have limited representation among the individuals currently holding named or university distinguished professorships. Departments and schools are encouraged to think broadly and inclusively when considering nominees. A list of the current distinguished professors can be found here.

All nomination materials should be submitted online prior to 5pm on Friday, February 25, 2022.

Distinguished Professors

Appointment as a distinguished professor is a significant honor, reflecting the recipient’s many valued accomplishments and contributions to the University and the field.

The Professorships awarded through this call for nominations will be effective in the Fall of 2022. The professorships carry an annual stipend of $15,000.

Nominees must be current KU full professors.

The major criteria for selecting University distinguished professors are:

  • A truly distinguished record of scholarship. Although this criterion is highly dependent on the breadth of an area, nominees generally should rank among the most distinguished scholars in their fields in this country and usually should possess an international reputation.
  • A proven record of interest in and concern for the growth and success of their students, colleagues, and the University.
  • A demonstrated interest in activities in related fields and in participation in university affairs generally as well as professional organizations.
  • A record of notable service to communities at the local, state, national, and/or international levels.

All nominees will be considered in accordance with the University policy on nondiscrimination, available at https://policy.ku.edu/IOA/nondiscrimination
