Student Athletes and Academics

KU is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and Big 12 Conference, and sponsors 16 sports with over 500 student-athletes. NCAA rules require that faculty must treat student-athletes the same as they would any other student, with no special benefits permitted.

NCAA rules allow KU to provide academic support services, including tutoring, for student-athletes. Paul Buskirk is the Director of KU's Athletic Student Athlete Support Services. During the semester, you will receive correspondence from his office requesting information about the academic progress of student-athletes in your classes. Student-athletes have signed a waiver that permits faculty to release this information to the Athletics Student Athlete Support Services office. If you have a concern about a student-athlete’s performance in your class, please feel free to contact Paul Buskirk at or by phone at 785-864-7960.

KU’s Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) to the NCAA is Dr. Susan Williams of the KU Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department.  Please contact her if you have any questions or concerns about student-athletes or the Athletics Department.  She may be contacted at or by phone at 785-864-2919.

KU Athletics works to minimize class absences for student-athletes as much as possible.  However, student-athletes will sometimes be required to miss class because of their travel and competition commitments.  Please feel free to contact the Susan Williams or Paul Buskirk if you have any questions or concerns regarding student-athlete absences from your course.
